One of England's Darkest Skies

The North Pennines is one of England's designated dark sky discovery sites. On a clear night above Heather Brae, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Few places in England offer stargazing this good or this unspoiled.

Beyond the skies, the landscape carries deep layers of history. Lead mining villages, ancient drove roads, Norse settlements, the ruins of medieval abbeys and a tradition of fell farming that has shaped this dale for a thousand years. The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle houses a world-class art collection that draws visitors from across Europe.
